E.ON makes FirstSpirit™ its global groupwide standard

e-Spirit’s content management system for 120 websites and SAP portal integration

The energy group E.ON is basing the relaunch of its worldwide web presence on the high-end content management system (CMS) FirstSpirit™. With e-Spirit’s solution, E.ON will standardize a total of 60 internet sites for all of its market and business units as well as 60 intranets – replacing the existing solutions with FirstSpirit™ as the standard CMS across the group. adesso AG is handling introduction and template development as well as the entire application management and 24/7 support. In addition, web in|MOTION from adesso mobile solutions GmbH will adapt the content maintained by FirstSpirit™ for display on mobile devices.

E.ON established the foundation for standardizing all of its internet and intranet sites by introducing centralized templates, workflows and publishing processes in the Online Master Template Project (OMTP). Optimal content reusability throughout the group will be one of the main benefits of using the CMS as a central content hub. “We require the highest standards for our content management system in the comprehensive redesign of our websites,” says Marco Thelen, one of the three project managers assigned to this task at E.ON AG. “The solution needed to integrate seamlessly into the SAP NetWeaver portal and had to produce sophisticated processes to safeguard a flexible and simple approach to using content several times. Of course multilingualism and scalability as well as a high level of user friendliness and functionality are also required,” adds his colleague, André Brüggemann.

FirstSpirit™ displayed its strengths impressively during a selection process, ending with a three-week proof of concept phase – its seamless integration into the SAP NetWeaver navigational structure was particularly convincing. As FirstSpirit™ creates content objects directly in the portal, the portal’s rights and role concepts can continue to be used – avoiding data duplication. Thanks to the CMS’ open architecture, E.ON can also integrate other existing IT systems into FirstSpirit™. The package management module PackagePool also scored highly with the customer. This program allows users to maintain templates and content centrally and distribute these to related projects with a simple click of the mouse. When needed, individual adjustments can also be made – for example when certain country-specific needs require it or for individual unique websites.

e-Spirit and adesso developed the core platform version 1.0 during the already completed implementation phase. It contains all the basic features such as master templates and specialized workflows that will form the basis for all web projects.
