Mobilization

Content is rarely designed specifically for mobile apps

With technologies such as the iPhone and BlackBerry, we're seeing quite a boom in Internet usage on mobile devices. But the fact remains that most web content is created for display on standard monitors. For that reason, when such content is displayed on smaller devices and screens the results can be problematic. By failing to realise the full potential of their web sites for such uses, companies undermine their own efforts.

Delivering mobile content for specific devices

With the high-end FirstSpirit™ solution, companies can provide their content specifically tailored for use with mobile devices. For this reason, FirstSpirit™ uses a content aggregator and mobile-device control which deliver content in a format that is compatible with specific devices.

FirstSpirit™ also integrates automated database schema and external portals. This way content from other branches can be quickly and easily integrated from virtually any mature legacy- and database system. In addition, it enables companies to publish content through a range of different output channels, including portals like SAP NetWeaver, IBM WebSphere, WS Commerce, or Microsoft SharePoint. Content can either be published in PDF or print form, or directly to mobile devices via optimised web pages.

Just one click for the editor

The FirstSpirit™ Mobilization module, which is integrated in the central CMS, lets you create mobile content very elegantly. With our "User Agent Profiling" feature, the requested content is delivered in a form that is optimized for the relevant mobile device – and in real time. The system currently recognises over 10,000 different mobile devices and new models are being added constantly. As with all e-Spirit solutions, usability for the editor is a key priority with the mobilization module: The structure of the content is independent and freely configurable. Content can be designated as "mobile" with just a single click in the editor view. Navigation items and contents are created and edited directly in the FirstSpirit™ editing interface. The preview option can be used to check your results in advance before approving them in the mobile phone simulator.

Providing content specifically for mobile apps

Setting up content sniffers

User-friendliness is a top priority with the optional implementation of the "browser sniffer". The application uses the mobile device identification to determine how http queries should be handled and forwards them to either the relevant mobile web page or a classical web page differentiating based on whether it's a "mobile device" or "desktop browser". The user thus receives the requested content at all times reliably and for optimal display, even without knowing the actual mobile URL of a portal. In addition to simple mobilization of existing web content, Mobilization can also be used to implement a full range of web applications for the mobile channel – from field service solutions to online banking – efficiently and in real time. The Mobilization module can be installed and set up very quickly with existing FirstSpirit™ projects. Existing contents can then be automatically designated as mobile content or can be selected by the editor for the mobile output channel using appropriate templates.

Independent or integrated

Mobilization provides various options for the creation of mobile portals: The user can set up a mobile portal as an independent project or integrate the application in an existing FirstSpirit™ project. The portal created is autonomous, meaning the structure is independent of the structure of the original portal. Therefore no basic alteration of the infrastructure of the existing server environment is required. The solution operates purely via software in the CMS. The technology that is used also allows different content to be combined while maintaining consistency of design, so-called "content syndication". This way content from multiple portals can be published in a single portal and can also be filtered in advance as required. With easy integration of such third party contents as traffic information, weather forecasts, and route planners, mobile portals become even more inviting to users.
